The people of Bastion Ranch
There have been five generations of our family that have
lived at
Bastion
Ranch. Probably the best known person in this history was our father,
Edmond Miège. He came to the Shuswap from Switzerland in the 1940’s as a
young man, to work with his grandfather building Bastion Ranch. When
they first started farming at Bastion Ranch, there was no road on this
side of the lake.
All the farm produce had to be moved by boat to
Sicamous, where it was sold. Most of the work was accomplished with help
from horses, and many of the old horse drawn machines are still here on
the farm.
Edmond (or "Eddy" to his Canadian friends)
lived
and worked on the farm for over 50 years, and was well known to friends
and neighbours for his kindness and generosity. He and his step-father,
Gus Naef, cleared land, raised cattle and crops, and enjoyed life. Eddy
had a strong commitment to tradition and family, and it is in that
spirit that we continue farming today, involving two families and all
six of his grandchildren.
